Asda to implement packaging scorecard

Wal-Mart's packaging scorecard will be launched at Asda in 2010 and will judge their packaging suppliers on the results.

Asda's parent Company, Wal-Mart, started using the scorecard in the USA almost two year ago after a 12 month trial.  The UK version has been much anticipated, and, was expected this year - it will now be introduced early next year

A spokeswoman for Asda has said that they were still finalising and testing the 'UK scorecard'.  "It will be based on the Wal-Mart scorecard, but we want to make sure it is fit for purpose and for our customers in the UK," she said.

It was said that the scorecard was designed to help its buyers make decisions that were "good for business, customers and the environment".  It has since been introduced in Canada and Mexico.

The scorecard evaluates packaging against a host of criteria - greenhouse gases, substrate material choices and chemical composition amongst others.

The retailer's aim is to reduce packaging in its supply chain by 5% by 2013.
