Big potential for nanotechnology packaging

Dr Graham Moore, a PIRA Consultant, has explained "big potential" for nanotechnology in packaging provided issues in connection with consumer safety are fully addressed.

The comments were made during an online conference last week which was arranged by the NanoKTN in partnership with Leatherhead Food Research, titled Development and Enhancement of Packaging through Nanotechnology.

Possible outlets for nanotechnologies were highlighted as barriers, track and trace, anti-counterfeit measures and intelligent packaging, however, Moore said that before they could become readily accepted by the packaging market, issues surrounding nanotechnologies such as supply and consumer safety must be addressed.

He is quoted as saying that if brands "go down the route" of nanotechnology they must have the "quantity and quality they need".  "Packaging is already under huge scrutiny because of migration of chemicals," he said. "They must show there is no migration and no detriment to the consumer."

Nanotechnology refers to nanoscale materials (ENM), those between one and 100 billionth of a metre.
