Environment Agency asks sector to assess responsibilities

The Environment Agency is pressing companies within the packaging sector to assess their responsibilities under the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

The CRC replaces the Carbon Reduction Agreement and the scheme could reduce carbon emissions by 11.6m tonnes by 2020 according to the EA.

Firms that have at least one half hourly metre will need to register with the EA, or authorities in Scotland and Northern Ireland between April and September.

EA Head of Climate Change and Sustainability, Tony Grayline,, said participants would also "save participants money in terms of lower energy bills", adding, "The analysis shows the investments needed to reduce carbon emissions more than pay for themselves in terms of energy bills within a relatively short period."

Following a first year registration period firms that use around £500k worth of energy per annum will need to buy and sell allowances to cover their carbon emissions from April 2011.

Mr Grayline said the EA had worked actively with the Department for Energy and Climate Change to ensure organisations were aware of the scheme, saying, "We are reasonably confident that we have contacted all organisations who will qualify for the threshold and we hope that as the scheme progresses it will be brought to the attention of directors and board members."
