LGA calls for packaging maufacturers to help pay for landfill

Packaging producers should be picking up a greater proportion of the cost of packaging disposal, according to the Local Government Association (LGA).

Town hall chiefs have revealed that councils are paying an estimated 100m to dispose of packaging and have called for packaging producers to help cover this cost.

Currently, town halls pay 40 in tax for every tonne of waste that they send to landfill and fines are to be introduced for any waste disposed of in this way that exceeds the council’s targets targets.

"If retailers and manufacturers start paying the true price for their unnecessary packaging, they’ll have a real incentive to get rid of it altogether," said chairman of the LGA environment board Councillor Paul Bettison.

"Better labelling of whether packaging is recyclable would make things easier for shoppers who want to do the right thing for the environment and help keep their council tax down," he added.

Bettison will speak on the matter at the Futuresource conference at Excel in London today.
