MeadWestvaco to cut 100 jobs
MeadWestvaco, the global consumer packaging solutions provider, has announced plans to axe approximately 100 jobs from its operations in France.
The Company offers food and beverage packaging from its two production lines in Châteauroux, central France and Maurepas, near Paris, and focuses on packaging for the dairy, brewery and soft drink sectors.
The restructuring requirements will see the plants increase its technological capabilities while reducing staffing, there will be an investment of €3.6m to improve the two production lines and see the installation of an off-set printing press.
The two French sites will see increased automation and will need fewer operators. Whilst the company is quoted as saying that this will require the redundancy of around 100 employees, French media sources believe this figure may be higher.
A representative from MWV said that the French food and beverage business was facing higher production costs that many other parts of Europe, particularly Eastern Europe. "It has experienced a decrease in consumption coupled with changing market characteristics and high costs for raw materials."
