Milk in bags to be trialled at Tesco

Following strong sales growth, milk in a plastic bag format supplied by Dairy Crest, is being trialled in Tesco stores.

Dairy Crest say they have invested in efficiency improvements and are "making good progress" in liquid milk sales.  In particular, sales of bagged milk with the Jugit container were growing strongly.

A statement said, "In addition to national distribution to Sainsbury's we have started a trial with Tesco and are also increasing sales to our doorstep customers."

Packaging News has been advised by Tesco that the trials were for Dairy Crest branded milk, rather than its own products, adding,  "We are currently trialling the Dairy Crest Country Life milk bags in a small number of our stores."

Sainsbury have also sold milk in bags with success, but, the product was withdrawn from Waitrose claiming that it was not popular with customers and led to increased product waste.

Dairy Crest's performance in the first part of the year was in line with objectives said Chief Executive Mark Allen, saying, "Dairy Crest continues to benefit from being a broadly based business."

The Jugit container is produced by RPC.
