Saica Packaging visited by stray parachutist

An unexpected visitor appeared at Saica Packaging's Peterlee factory when a skydiver from a nearby parachute centre landed on its roof.

The 20-year-old from Durham University's Free Fall Club landed on the roof after being sent off course from the airfield which is located adjacent to the factory.

Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service was called to the factory to help rescue the skydiver, who had landed safely on the roof of the factory.

Ian Rosenvinge, Parachute Centre Manager, told Packaging News  that he was grateful to the fire service for "quickly and efficiently" getting the man down.  He also thanked the factory staff for their assistance, saying, "The people in the factory were great. I phoned them up and spoke to them afterwards - it gave them an interesting afternoon."

The Durham students had been celebrating the birthday of one of their members, who unfortunately was unable to jump after the incident due to lack of light.  Rosenvinge said that it had been 12 years since this had last happened.

In November, Saica Peterlee entered into consultation with workers with a total of 30 jobs under threat at the site.
